A laundress seen from the side against a bright window, pressing down on an iron with both hands. Linen hangs above her head and lies in a pale heap on the table; the light behind her leaves her face and dress almost in silhouette.
The picture is loosely painted, the window and hanging cloth reduced to broad washes of white, grey and blue. The stooped posture and the weight of the arms on the iron carry the whole composition.
