Jalais Hill, Pontoise

A view across cultivated hillsides outside a small town. A path drops from the foreground toward a cluster of white houses, with the rounded slope of the hill rising behind them; the fields are laid in as broad planes of green and ochre, and a mass of white cloud takes up much of the sky.

The picture is built from firm, blocky strokes and a clear division into foreground, village and hill, which gives the landscape a solid, almost architectural structure. Two small figures on the path set the scale.
