Commissions

A painting of a particular place, room or person, made the same way as everything else in the studio.

How it goes

  1. 1

    A conversation

Write with what you have in mind: a place, a room, a person, a size, a wall. If it’s a place, a visit is best; failing that, we talk about it until it’s clear.

  2. 2

    A study

A small drawing or oil sketch, usually within three weeks. It settles the composition and the size. You keep the study whatever happens next.

  3. 3

    The painting

Once the study is agreed, half the fee is due and the painting is made. Most take six to twelve weeks. You’ll see it once, midway, and again when it’s done.

  4. 4

    Delivery

The balance is due on completion. Paintings travel framed or on the stretcher, crated for shipping, or delivered by hand within a day’s drive of Lexington.

Sizes and prices

Prices depend on size and on how much travel and study a subject needs. These are starting points; the study fee is separate and counts toward the painting.

Worth knowing

Commissions are taken a few at a time, so there is sometimes a wait of a couple of months before the study can start. If the study doesn’t feel right, that is the moment to stop; nothing further is owed.

Finished commissions are photographed for the studio archive and may appear on this site unless you’d rather they didn’t. Every original leaves with an NFC tag that verifies it at sunurai.com/v.
