On the Beach, Dieppe

A small group of visitors gathered on the sand: women in blue and black crinolines, men in dark coats and hats, one woman seated in a chair with her back to us, and a small dog at the right. The sea is a thin grey band; a pier and a single sail sit on the horizon under a wide, cloudy sky.

The panel is nearly square and most of it is sky. The figures are set low and painted in crisp, quick touches, with the greys of the beach and the water carrying the light.
