An empty panelled room at night. Moonlight through a many-paned window lays a grid of pale light across the bare floorboards; a closed door stands to the right, and the wainscot and window frame are picked out in a narrow range of greys and dusty browns.

There are no figures and no furniture. The composition rests on the geometry of the room itself, the verticals of the panelling against the slant of the light on the floor, and on the softness of the paint, which blurs every edge.
